Ninewells ward feeling flushed after unusual donation

Staff in ward 10 at Ninewells Hospital are feeling flushed after accepting an unusual donation from a former patient.

Broughty Ferry woman Glynnis Marra, who had bowel cancer, decided to something a bit different to say thank you to staff on ward 10 for their kindness and support during her stay.

Glynnis said, “I wanted to do something different to thank the staff on ward 10 for their excellent care. My friend Norma told me about twinned toilets and I thought it was an excellent idea.

“The toilet twinning scheme helps those in desperate poverty in countries across the world have access to a proper latrine, clean water and the information they need to be healthy. Having a working toilet helps prevent the spread of disease and makes a huge difference to people.

“I donated enough money for three toilets which are named after Ninewells Hospital ward 10. The toilets are in Nwandiga in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Dwie in Liberia and in Bechani in Malawi.

“Dundee is the first city in Scotland to have twinned toilets which makes Ninewells the first Scottish hospital to have them too.

Accepting this unique gift, senior charge nurse Jennifer Brown said, “Ward 10 would like to thank Glynnis for the very kind donation to the toilet twinning charity.

“The staff are very excited that we are now associated with this admirable initiative which is giving people access to sanitary toilet facilities and making a real difference to their lives.”
