Information about treatment provided by dental students under Shared Care arrangements

Information about treatment provided by dental students.

At Dundee Dental School we train the next generation of dentists, dental therapists, dental nurses and technicians. Before they can qualify and practice independently, they each must gain the necessary experience of routine dentistry under the supervision of qualified dental professionals.

Every year, Dundee Dental School has spaces available on the student treatment clinics for patients to receive dental treatment free of charge in exchange for their time and commitment to help train the dental workforce of the future.
The first appointment will be short and will allow a qualified dentist to briefly examine the patient. They will answer any questions the patient may have about student treatment and appropriately assign them to a student who is able to provide the care they need.
  • By attending the undergraduate student clinic, the patient accepts that their dental treatment will be carried out by dental students under the supervision of a suitably qualified dentist or dental therapist.
  • Student clinics are not covered by national waiting time guarantees and are available Monday to Friday (9am-3.30pm) during University term time only.
  • Treatment will take longer to complete than at a high-street dental practice as students work slower than fully qualified dental professionals.
  • We cannot guarantee that all treatment will be carried out by the same student or under supervision of the same qualified member of staff.
  • Some treatment (e.g. implants and tooth whitening) are not offered on student clinics.
  • All emergency dental care should be undertaken by the referring general dental practitioner.
  • If patients are unable to attend student clinics when required, then the offer of student treatment at Dundee Dental School may be withdrawn.
  • If patients do not turn up to their appointment, then the offer of student treatment will be withdrawn.
  • If a patient can no longer attend an appointment, they should contact the dental school to cancel the appointment as soon as they know that you will not be able to attend. This may allow another patient to take their appointment.
  • Once the planned course of treatment is complete, the patient will normally be discharged from the dental school clinic. We cannot guarantee ongoing review at the dental school.

Please note that the students do not provide the following on their treatment clinics:
  • Dental implant treatment
  • Tooth whitening
  • Sedation
  • Repeated and complicated root canal treatment
  • Complex crown and bridgework
  • Orthodontics

Please note that while treatment will be provided on the student clinics at Dundee Dental Hospital and School you will remain responsible for routine primary care requirements such as the provision of emergency care (shared care approach). If you have a plan to provide treatment in addition to what you have requested in this form, please let us know.
