Support while in Hospital

Support is available to patients, visitors and staff to stop or refrain from smoking while on NHS sites.
NHS Tayside has a strict no smoking policy which makes all premises and grounds smoke free.

Legislation introduced by the Scottish Government extends the ban on smoking indoors to a 15 metre perimeter outside hospital buildings. This means that anyone smoking with 15 metres of a hospital can face a fixed penalty notice of £50 or a fine of up to £1000 if taken to court. The legislation is enforced by local authority environmental health officers.

NHS Tayside asks everyone to support our no smoking policy and work in partnership with us to improve the health of the public.

Support for patients being admitted to hospital

Patients who are current smokers can be provided with support and treatment for tobacco addiction as soon as they are admitted to hospital.

Evidence shows that this helps keep patients comfortable and focused on their clinical treatment during their hospital stay.

The Tobacco Addiction Prescribing Guidance is a clinical pathway that provides NRT for inpatients to manage nicotine withdrawal and to increase quit attempt success.

Before Admission

Patients attending hospital pre-assessment clinics will be given information about the No Smoking Policy and the therapeutic benefits of abstaining from smoking during their stay in hospital. They will be signposted to community pharmacy for further stop smoking advice and support. Smokers are four times more likely to succeed in stopping smoking if they have support.

Support for outpatients

Patients attending an outpatient appointment will be asked if they smoke as part of their assessment and information can be provided on the wide range of local support available to help them stop smoking or refrain from smoking while on hospital sites.
